UPDATES ON OUR CAMPAIGN FOR A NATIONAL SENIORS STRATEGY
After months of study, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development, and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (HUMA) has tabled the report Advancing Inclusion and Quality of Life for Seniors. This study came as a result of MP Marc Serré’s motion asking the government to get to work on a National Seniors Strategy.
On May 1, our advocacy team attended the International Longevity Centre Canada’s conference focused on building inclusive, age-friendly societies at the University of Ottawa. As part of the day’s proceedings, attendees heard from the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, the honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, whose mandate includes seniors. During this portion, advocacy director Sayward Montague had the opportunity to pose a question to the minister, asking how this government plans to implement a National Seniors Strategy. His answer was surprising and caused some concern from advocates in the crowd – read our news story here. https://www.federalretirees.ca/en/News-Views/News-Listing/May/Federal-Retirees-questioning-federal-governments-commitment-to-a-National-Seniors-Strategy
Given these developments on this important file, the advocacy department is preparing to launch a five-step campaign to continue to pressure this government to take concrete action in the further development of a National Seniors Strategy. Set to release in June, the campaign will include online tools, postcards and helpful background documents. Stay tuned!
